Family Math
A Kindergarten Math Readiness Program
The Three Components
of EMLI
FAMILY MATH
EMLI’s flagship program is an intergenerational, math-centric kindergarten readiness program for preschool children and their families. EMLI adopts Eason et al’s (2020) definition of “family math.” This definition includes an awareness of culturally-relevant math activities, the utilization of informal contexts for math learning, and the necessity to both supply and familiarize families with early math resources.
Students and adult family members are invited into the Family Math classroom to work through selected activities with their child guided by EMLI’s teachers. In an informal, welcoming environment, parents learn to model critical thinking strategies, utilize targeted mathematics terminology, and become familiar with how to best play an active role in supporting their child’s early math skills development.
